Chhattisgarh to be free of power cuts: Raman Singh

Raipur, Aug 15 (IANS) With a planned investment of Rs.1,350 billion ($33 billion) in power generation, Chhattisgarh will soon become free of power cuts, Chief Minister Raman Singh said in his Independence Day speech here Wednesday.

'The state has entered into deals with 34 private firms for setting up power projects totalling 30,000 MW with an investment to the tune of Rs.1,35,000 crore,' he said.

Doctor who treated a Naxalite is now behind bars

New Delhi: A law-abiding citizen who was actively involved in community service in Chattisgarh has been put behind bars. His crime? He investigated a few fake encounter cases in the Naxalite hit districts of the state.

Dr Binayak Sen has been languishing in Raipur jail for the past three-months. Even though the state government has no incriminating evidence against him, he has been charged with promoting Naxalite outfits in the state.

PM misled country, Parliament on nuke deal: BJP

RAIPUR: The BJP on Friday accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of "misleading" the country and Parliament on the civil nuclear agreement with the US and said the pact was not in India's interest.

"The Prime Minister has misled the nation and Parliament on the nuclear deal with America," BJP president Rajnath Singh told reporters here. He is on a two-day tour of Chhattisgarh.

The BJP is opposed to the stand taken by the UPA government and the prime minister over the agreement which will not benefit the country, he said.

BALCO to have world's largest aluminium plant

Raipur: Vedanta Resources plc, a London-based mining and metal major, will set up a 650,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) smelter plant in its Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) facility located in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, an official said on Tuesday. The company will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government on Wednesday to set up another smelter plant in the BALCO complex in Korba, about 200 km from Raipur, the official said. On completion of the project, the production output of BALCO will go up from 135,000 tpa to 1,000,000 tpa.

Chinese firm outbids BHEL for Chhattisgarh project

RAIPUR: A Chinese company has outbid public sector engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) to win a contract from the Chhattisgarh government for a 600 mw thermal power project in Korba district.

The China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Company (CMEC) bagged the contract quoting the lowest rate Rs.3.61 crores (Rs.36.1 million), an official of the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CSEB) told media.

The contract for the construction of two units, each one of 300 mw, went to the Chinese firm despite stiff protests by the Employees Federation of CSEB.

Steel trader arrested while offering bribe to MP

RAIPUR: A steel trader has been arrested in Chhattisgarh while offering Rs 500,000 as bribe to a MP to allegedly to stop him from speaking against the theft of steel valued at millions of rupees from the Bhilai Steel Plant.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), on a tip off by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tarachand Sahu, arrested trader Pawan Lakhotia late Friday at the former's residence in Bhilai, 30 km from here, when the businessman offered the money to Sahu with a packet of sweets.

Raipur Alloys raises Rs 85 cr through preferential allotment

Mumbai, Aug. 6 (PTI): Steel and sponge iron maker Raipur Alloys today said it has raised Rs 85 crore through preferential issue of equity shares to investors such as LB India Holdings Mauritius and Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC).

The board of directors at its meeting recently approved the allotment of more than 26.31 lakh equity shares to LB India Holdings Mauritius II Ltd and over 18.42 lakh shares to IDFC at Rs 190 per share on preferential basis.

Health facilities improve after death of eight tribals

Raipur, July 31 - The Chhattisgarh government has been holding emergency health camps and is providing medical facilities round the clock in Gabhora village of Kawardha district from where eight deaths were reported during the weekend.

Chief Minister Raman Singh has instructed officials of Kwardha district, about 250 km from here, to tone up health facilities in remote villages and provide free medical care to all tribals.

The instruction was issued after eight members of the Baiga tribe, a community on the verge of extinction, died last weekend in Gabhora village.
